Week 5-companionSHIP

October 17, 2016

Isn't it so cool that we have the Holy Ghost as our constant companion?! It's such a blessing and brings me so much comfort! Especially as a new missionary. I don't know everything yet but with his help i always find things to say. This week was really good! Now that i have the hang of things its a lot easier. We had a tragic event happen here in Radford. So me and my companion had on our schedule to visit this girl. But at church we heard she wasn't feeling well so we decided to text her brother to see if she was okay. They responded with a text saying that she had jumped off a bridge. So this whole week the town has been searching the river for her. We've had search teams and boats and helicopters and everything all week. But no luck. It's very sad and we've been over to the families house multiple times trying to comfort them. The day they called off the search i received a letter from my mom. Which included a talk about why bad things happen to good people and how we can handle the hard times in life including the loss of loved ones. She wrote a little comment on the top of the page saying i think you could use this a lot on your mission. And she was right. I shared the talk with the family that night and couldn't even get through it with out crying because it was so cool realizing how the sprit works. My mom didn't know the situation at all but yet she happened to send the perfect thing for a family/ town in time of need. So minus that sad stuff. We had a pretty successful week! We went to see one of our investigators that we gave a Book of Mormon to and i couldn't help but laugh when i saw her book. She has highlighted EVERY single word that she's read so far. Literally every word. At first i was like man she doesn't know the point of highlighting verses but then i was like this lady is awesome! The entire Book of Mormon is awesome and every word is important and i should find reasons to highlight every verse too! So we were walking through a trailer park this week and met a man name Charles. He's a tall skinny black man who loves to talk. We talked to him about the church and then invited him to come with us next Sunday. He agreed! So when we were finished he said "Hey do you want some carrot cake!? Granny made it for my birthday last month!" Considering the fact that we don't know this man and he lives in a sketchy house, i for sure thought my companion would decline the offer....nope. "Yes we'd love some!" I bet you can imagine my facial expression as he walked back into his house to get us the cake. Lets just saw God protects his missionaries, because we both had some and we aren't dead yet! Wahoo!! So the highlight of my week was definitely Saturday. My personal study that morning consisted of me reading about how to find people to teach the gospel to and it included lots of scriptures about how God prepares people for us to teach. I didn't realize how true that was until we met Jennifer. We met her last week while tracking but she was busy so we said wed come back later. And we did. We came in and said a prayer and then she started crying. She bore her heart out to us on how she's been suffering ever since her grandson died a few months ago. She asked us where he was and if he was in heaven or if he was a spirit and all that fun stuff. Me and my companion both flung out our plan of salvation pamphlets and started teaching. It was perfect. She was so interested and grateful for the peace of mind we gave her about her grandson and she brought up how she's so excited for the day that the earth will be clean from all sin and sorrow. Then we felt it. We knew she was ready. So we asked her if she would follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized by someone holding the priesthood authority of God. She said "Well ya but i've already been baptized but not by someone with authority, so i need to do it again?" We both shook our heads yes. Keep in mind that normally that conversation doesn't go to well with most people who are already baptized but she didn't have one single problem with it. She's scheduled to be baptized on December 3rd and I'm so excited for her! I left her house with a strong testimony that Heavenly Father really does prepare people for us to teach and all we need to do is find them. I'll end on a funny story. So we went to teach this lady but she wasn't home but her kids were outside so we talked with them for a while. They're HILARIOUS. I just love how black people talk. Anyways, so this little chunky girl is talking about how she lovesss McDonalds and her brother says "Hey if you keep eating McDonalds your feet are gonna get really fat!" And then she said "I already is fat!" But then her brother said " No you aint, thats just water blown up in your stomach" It was so funny but so cute because he was protecting his little sister and making sure she knew she wasn't fat. Sorry i know long emails are are hard to read but if you made it through, good job:) I hope you all have a wonderful week!!!!!! P.s. that yummy looking thing is a pepperoni roll. They're famous here. And yes, that stuff in the blue bowl is carrot cake.
